SUMMARY

The Environmental Defence Society sought conditions to offset the greenhouse effects caused by CO2 emissions that would be emitted from a combined cycle station (burning gas to generate electricity). Stratford Power had obtained resource consents to build a 500MW plant in Stratford.

This decision immediately followed, and raised similar issues to, Environmental Defence Society (Incorporated) v Auckland Regional Council A183/2002 [2002] NZEnvC 315; [2002] NZRMA 492; (2003) 9 ELRNZ 1.
