SUMMARY
In 2022, the NSW Independent Planning Commission approved an expansion of MACH Energy's Mount Pleasant open cut coal mine near the Hunter Valley. A group of residents who live near the mine (DAMSHEG) have applied for judicial review of the IPC's decision to the Land and Environment Court. They will ask the Court to declare the decision invalid due to the health impacts of the mine on the community, the climate impacts of the coal from the mine and the indirect impacts on the local environment. The Land and Environment Court upheld the approval for the 444Mt project by the Independent Planning Commission on 19 August 2024.
