[12] The appellant’s extended family largely live a subsistence lifestyle on the family’s three-acre plot on DEF island. They grow food crops specific to the local area and harvest coconuts as well as going fishing. The climate conditions in Kiribati increasingly affect the family land and it is not easy to produce enough food for the family because the land is drying out and is affected by sea water.

[75] The Tribunal acknowledges the country information provided by counsel highlights that Kiribati is one of the poorest countries in the region. Development challenges include its small and dispersed population, limited private sector and the impacts of climate change that are increasingly felt (see, DFAT report at p 1). […]
